Since Labov’s groundbreaking research in the 1960s, sociolinguistic studies have amply documented the effects of social factors on the language of different speaker groups within a speech community, and the significance of the interplay between language variation and language change. Considering the sociolinguistic tradition as a whole, there has been a preponderance of studies which are concerned with regional variation and variation due to social class and gender differences.
