Pompeu Fabra is a key figure for the Catalan language and its culture. He is regarded as the ordenador, the person who put modern Catalan in order. His work on reconstructing the language – as a means of communication and also, especially, as a sign of identity – made him one of the outstanding personalities in the movement of Noucentisme which energised and defined the direction of Catalan nationalism from the beginning of the twentieth century.
