Joel Rubin – Joshua Horowitz: Bessarabian Symphony. Early Jewish Instrumental Music
Author: Rubin, Horowitz
Bessarabia, a region between the Prut and Dniester rivers and the Black Sea, was a part of the Pale of Jewish Settlement a treasure trove of Yiddish folklore and music, and brought forth much of the music of this recording.
The Bessarabian Symphony was a New York klezmer band in the 1920s led by trumpeter Arele Greenspan and drummer Harry Truntz. We dedicate this album to them and to the countless klezmorim, known and uknown, whose lives and livelihoods were extinguished through Nazism, Stalinism and all of the other “isms” which abounded (and continue to abound) during this century.
