??????:
Hindi is one of the most important modern Indian languages. It was spoken by around 550 million people in India according to the 2001 census of India. In addition as a spoken language Hindi and Urdu are grammatically the same language and so Hindi speakers can also communicate with the 100 million or
so Urdu speakers in India and Pakistan. So there are well over half a billion speakers of Hindi in the world today. Hindi also has a wide range of prose and poetry literary traditions which reflect the cultural diversity of Indian society. In an age of the explosion of mass media in India Hindi is also increasingly
prominent as a language in which Television broadcasting takes place. India is also rich in printed news media and the Hindi daily press plays a vital role in contemporary Indian social political life. There are probably as many reasons to learn Hindi as there are speakers of Hindi. This book is for the La Trobe University first year first semester Hindi. By the time you have worked through it you should be able to converse in everyday Hindi and read and write Hindi. It includes around 900 words which form a basic Hindi vocabulary. By the end of the subject you should be in a position to start a second semester level subject. Each lesson contains a dialogue or dialogues, notes on the dialogues, exercises and a glossary.
