The major task of the book is a sociophonetic exploration of voice pitch characteristics of men and women across the differing cultures (nations) of Japan and America. Prosodic features such as voice pitch are an unconscious yet socially and culturally constructed linguistic property.
While voice pitch can be roughly determined by the anatomical differences of individuals, it can also at the same time be an excellent linguistic resource which carries social meanings (such as gender identity and other socially salient categories).
